"Courses for Horses" Build a Shavehorse Workshop : 25 - 28 JULY 2024

  • $50000

'Courses for Horses'

The Shaving Horse or more commonly known, Shavehorse is a clamping device which although originating in ancient Europe, is just as relevant and useful in any modern day woodworking workshop. Effectively a foot powered clamp or vise, the Horse allows you to clamp and shape your workpiece whilst using both hands to manipulate a range of edged hand tools. Utilised by a multitude of traditional trades and craftspeople, the traditional Shavehorse had considerable variations in both construction and design, often related to the country or region of origin or specific use. However in the last few decades, woodworkers in the US have made the greatest innovations to the humble shave horse, in clever design, economics and effective use.

In this class you will be constructing a solid timber shave horse based on the excellent design of Tim Manney, a Maine Chairmaker, Toolmaker and Spoon carver of great renown. Like all projects that Tim puts his hand to, this design has been thoroughly thought through, with attention to clamping strength, economics of the user in both their sitting position and also body position while working. It also offers quick adjustability of the clamping head for switching from thin to thick stock, as well as an ability to shift the clamping mechanism itself, meaning the user can work timber forward of the head. Perfect for shaping spoons or parts with difficult grain.

Students will be using a range of hand tools, power tools and machinery to create their horse, in arguably the best equipped Chairmaking workshop in the country, instructed by Windsor Chairmaker, Glen Rundell - who utilises a shavehorse on almost a daily basis, has made over 30 shavehorses & knows them best.
